Even if you did your ADA plans when they were first required – in 1992 – they’re almost certainly in need of updating, in light of significant developments. In the last few years —

  • The 2010 regulations have imposed new requirements on new recreation facilities (including pools, golf courses, playgrounds, exercise facilities) and some existing ones.
  • The revised regulations add or expand on requirements about program access, service animals, Segways and similar devices, communication, ticket sales, and hotel reservations.
  • DOJ has issued guidance on emergency preparedness, health care, title II obligations generally, museums, and polling places.

The 2010 DOJ regulations don’t specify that you must do a new barrier removal plan under title III, or a new self-evaluation or transition plan under title II (setting out changes required to policies, programs, activities, and facilities). But it would be difficult to comply with the new requirements – as to policy as well as physical access – unless you see how you measure up to them.

ADA One can help you with a “snapshot” assessment of your current compliance status or guide you in developing new policies or revising existing ones, beginning a new self-evaluation process, planning for barrier removal, or devising a revised or new transition plan.

Assessment services from ADA One

ADA One now offers extensive assessment services to assist both public and private entities with self-evaluations, transition plans, or gap analyses. We tailor our own user-friendly electronic survey to your needs once we have gathered some initial information from your entity’s leaders and ADA Coordinator. Then —

  • We gather information about your current policies and practices from interviews with program managers (conducted by us or by your trained staff) and more open-ended but focused interviews for some types of programs.
  • We apply our in-house data analysis capabilities to information gathered, to provide a report of our findings, at the level of the City/County/entity, department, or program, along with recommendations.
  • We assist you in developing an action plan.
  • We develop a “living” automated project management system for you to use in tracking completion of the changes called for in the action plan.
